I think it's more likely to hurt your game than help it. I only play for play-money or equivalent if it's a new game that I'm learning. I'm sure some will say any and all experience must help your game, but the fact that you have doubts and realize that it could negatively impact your game, should suggest otherwise. That's just my opinion.
Edit: Also, you'll find that in each level you move up, you have to re-learn many aspects of the game. For example, a 3-6 game is so much different than a 10-20 game that it really requires adaptation and almost relearning of the game as a whole. I think this could be seen as a digression.
