Yes, minraising can do the trick against some opponents, but I think you played an exceptionally weak opponent this time. Most people aren't going to fold getting to 3-1, and you're going to face a lot of people that aren't going to check-fold their misses. After re-reading your post, I think this opponent IS susceptible to minraising, but I think a lot of the time you're going to encounter a lot more resistance.
