I have always, ALWAYS thought 500 to be a total crapshoot version of Gin, the kiddie version. And whenever I'd destroy kids after poker in Gin, theyd ask to play 500 and Id usually lose, and at the time just couldnt figure out a sensible way to have a big edge, but your reasoning sounds correct. If I ever play this painful game again, I'll have to try this.
