I see why the check call is better assuming he's a player and there's a good probability he had the J.

I avoid the potential river raise.

However, I run into a lot of bad players that call down with weaker pairs. I realy don't want to miss a good value bet either.

The problem in this case was that the read I had was based on a very limited sample and I really wasn't sure what I was dealing with yet.
