What type of OS are you plugging the possibly bad hard drives into?
Do the following:
control panel -> system ->hardware tab -> device manger button -> disk drives
how many drives are listed? if the drives are listed but your not seeing them in My Computer the drives will need to be mapped. Let me know if this works, there are other things you can try as well.
