Kind of off topic but this reminds me of a special on cancer treatments I watched on TV.

a cancer treatment that would cure a certain type of childrens cancer. This treatment could cure a deadly cancer!! It actually worked.
Wasn't lucrative enough for them to make a profit so they quit making it, now all the children that get this cancer will most likely die.

Yeah, we're going to need more info before we call BS on this story. Not saying that the original post is BS, but oftentimes those late night "documentaries" are nothing but misleading conjecture.
