NexGens are one step above the dice chips, but probably not two steps above. The biggest advantages to nexgens are: 1. that they have a recessed center, so they are easy to label and 2. many people like the edgespots/look.

This being said, I'll give three possible recommendations.

1. Faux Clay They're a Plain Jane Chip, but have a great feel and sound and stack very well. Many of the regulars on chiptalk.net recommend these as a starter set. About 6c a chip, plus delivery.

2. Sopranos. This is the other basic chip that people talk about. A little less plain, they have the edge spots, etc. About 10c a chip plus delivery.

3. Sample Set 1 and Sample Set 2 -- This will give you a sample of many of the chips in your price range. Holding the chip in your hand is probably the best way to decide what meets your needs. This would be my recommendation.
