Default Re: Need help, how many/what demonation chips to buy?

Here's an "off the cuff" for 500:

200 - $1
150 - $5
100 - $25
50 - $100

Add 200 more split between $1 and $5 if you want to go to 700. 500 would be very tight with 14 people in a tournament, 700 should be a better fit. You might not even need the $100 chips in reality but I like to color up. check out homepokertourney.com for some ideas.

My friends and I are obviously much poorer than you. We play games ranging from .05/.10 NLHE to .50/1.00 NLHE (when the rich cousin's come to the ranch! Limit poker up to 3/6 and then dealer's choice of any casino game with a .25/.50 or .50/1 limit structure. This means I need a .05 chip for blinds/antes and the bulk of my chips need to be in the .25 and $1. (You would need some 0.25 chips if you want to play ante games correctly)

I bought 700 nexgens and tailored the amounts to fit in a gamelandsports.com "elite" case:

150 Red - 5c
225 Green - 25c
225 Black - $1
75 Purple - $5
25 Yellow - $20
(5 extra of each for loss/damage)

With this set, I'm restructuring my tournaments to use the actual money value of the buyin... most of our "bigger" tournaments are $20 so that's my top chip. Insta-rebuy, just hand them one chip. "Normal" tournaments are either $10 or $20. I'll use the same blind structure for a $20 as I will for a $5 game, even keeping the initial .05/.10 level when we do $20's. We do like the bigger buyin events to be deeeeeep stacked and long lasting (I rock you all night long, baby!) while making the "little potatoes" go quick so we can do another.

My original example may not be much help to you but you'll probably pick up some help thinking about why I put my set together as I have.
