You mentioned that you play on PokerRoom. I've played a decent amount on there and I've found their $50 NL to be among the hardest on the net. I actually found the $100NL to be easier, but I only played a couple thousand hands of it. My advice to you would be to take a shot at $100NL but only play one table and make sure you can can concentrate fully on it. Take plenty of player notes and try to get a feel for how everyone plays and practice your hand-reading skills. Try to err on the side of playing weak-tight until you start to get a feel for the differences at this level; this should help you from losing a lot of money.
