I've thought about this in the past, and I agree with you, I'd definitely be suicidal if I were to ever become blind. I'd rather lose my hearing, or a limb, or my speech than not be able to see. The world would be a very boring, yet scary place if I was blind.

As to your "transplanting eyes" comment...they're already doing that to a certain extent. Cornea transplants are becoming more commonplace (but only help in certain types of blindness). Also, there has been progress in technology where electrical impulses are sent directly to the visual cortex of your brain, which causes you to "see" rudimentary shapes. The technology will continue to improve, especially considering that there are so many baby boomers getting older and losing their vision. Within our lifetimes, the technology that allowed Geordi Laforge to "see" on Star Trek will be a reality in some form.
