If the $3K is in the bank, get your bank to waive any daily limit your ATM/Debit card might have and just use an ATM to withdraw the cash while you're there. That'll save you the vig on one end. Then don't use a credit card to pay for your accommodations and meals, just use the Canadian cash. That way you'll have less to convert back to US$ when you return.

When you come back, just re-convert at a bank where you'll the least vig.
