I am from Detroit and I would not even consider ever staying at any hotel south of 8 mile unless it was the raddison or la ponchatrain. There have been numerous murders and dead bodies found in these places and I imagine the rooms are disgusting.
I would suggest you take I-75 north to I-696 W to Woodward Ave. Take Woodward Avenue northbound. North of 11 mile there is a strip of hotels/motels that are reasonably priced and extremely safe. It's about a 15 minute drive.
