No. I would guess that your original desktop machine did not have a NIC card and so they used a network adapter that plugs into your desktop through the USB port. Take a look. The USB cable probably goes to an adapter and from the adapter is ethernet cable going back to the modem. So you can just disconnect that cable from the cable modem and connect it instead to the router.

We get a light on the LAN 1 for the router but no internet. Another problem possibly is that the IP address and Default Gateway addresses are different. Can we just change the default gateway or is that a bad idea?

Are you using DHCP? Try releasing and renewing the network connection.
