congrats on winning the hand. That does seem like an awful unorthodox way to play AQ, though. I guess you could say he way attempting to get fancy and represent TJ or some bigger hand, hoping he might fold a big pair if thats what you held, given that he had decided to call down anyway. Maybe thats giving him a bit too much credit, though. His play seems pretty bad, and he should have had every indication that he was beat, or at least tried to find out earlier in the hand.
