I use eMule which I guess is a program made from someone who was dissatisfied with edonkey. I'm happy with the performance of emule. It still takes days to download a 1 GB file but I'm getting the file free so I have no complaints. I've seen speeds up to 20 kb/s on it but that's about as fast as I've gotten.
