People don't care about life, in general, because all people (and I feel pretty comfortable in saying this) are self-centered. That is, if you follow the thoughts far enough back, we are motivated only when something affects us and not a moment before. Ex. People don't care about the soldiers dying until they realize that dead bodies are a good platform from which to launch their own agenda (Reps. call them heroic patriots, Dems call them patriots whose deaths were in vain).
Is it right? Well "right" and "wrong" is pretty fluid. Sorry that there isn't a better answer, but the down and dirty answer is that people don't care because they don't get anything out of it.
