Your friend probably has a different view of what the poker night is supposed to encompass.

He probably views it as more of a social event. In which case, when you invite people over for a bbq or whatever, they never have to pay a cover fee or any of that crap. Most of the time they will be encouraged to bring a dish with them.

This is equivalent for a poker night of bringing your own beer or chipping in for food he orders.

That is fine, however, if you are coming to PLAY POKER rather than coming for a social event I think you should not be required pay anything up front. He is the one hosting out of his own free will. So long as you don't eat anything you owe him nothing. Being courteous is another story but hell if he's a consistent winner that should be enough.
