Perhaps you could explain why you think it's a huge problem? In plenty of other sports/games, the primary competitor is not the same person as the financial backer. This is true in auto racing, horse racing, bicycle racing and even baseball/football/basketball/hockey, where the franchise pays for travel expenses, equipment, and lodging, etc.
