I don't have the game yet, but it's coming in the mail. Meantime, I've checked out some of the forums, and on this one:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/forumdisplay.php?f=144
found some handy tips from users in different threads. I thought some of the Civ freaks here might benefit. Please feel free to post your own. I'm not going to clean up the ones I found, since I'm quoting them. Here goes.
First, on windowed mode, then some more on that, as well as other stuff.

You need to edit the game's .ini file. It should be inside "My Documents\My Games\Civilization
IV".
Then in the ini file, look for the lines:
; Specify whether to play in fullscreen mode 0/1/ask
FullScreen = 1
Personally I like to use "FullScreen = ask" so I can choose whether I want to play in full
screen or not.
While you are there, you may also want to enable screenshot capture if it's not enabled
already;
; Allow Screenshots. May affect performance on some video cards
AllowScreenShots = 1
Then to take screenshots, you just hit the PrintScreen key on your keyboard and it will output
the screenshot in JPEG format.
Screenshots are saved to the "My Documents\My Games\Civilization IV\ScreenShots" folder.

Also, you can set the size for the window in the INI. It's much better than resizing the
window or maximizing, which can lead to having cursors not pointing correctly, and doesn't
actually "show more" if you make it bigger anyways.
;
ScreenHeight = 960
; Custom Screen Resolution, ex: 1200x1200 - Normal resolutions can be set in-game and will be
used when both values are set to 0
ScreenWidth = 1260
Those are my settings for 1280x1024, giving enough room for the start menu and some leeway on
the sides of the screen.

This is for the users out there that wish to Run Civ4 in Windowed mode. Of the users that I
have had contact with that have run Civ4 in windowed mode, there was no noticable performance
hit.
One note: in windowed mode you cannot 'bump' the screen edge to scroll the map. Use your
keyboard's arrow keys instead.
How to set up windowed mode:
1) Browse to C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4 -- or your Civ4 root
directory.
2) Double-click "_Civ4Config" -- this will load CivilizationIV.ini, which is actually stored
somewhere in your MyDocuments... _Civ4Config is a shortcut to it.
3) Find the line that reads "FullScreen = 1"
4) Change the 1 to either 0, or ask (ask will make a pop-up when loading the game that lets
you choose each time)
5) Save and Exit
6) Reload Civ4.
Note: Two additional changes might be necessary to ensure the full window is visible. Either
change the resolution in-game, or manually change it by the following:
(This example sets the game's window size to 1024x768, useful for players with desktop res at
1280x960)
7) load the same Config file as before
8) Find and change ScreenHeight from 0 to 768
9) Find and change ScreenWidth from 0 to 1024
10) Save and Exit.
11) Reload Civ4.
Enjoy Windowed mode =)

One more tweak.
To use mouse scrolling to move around the map in Windowed mode change this ini file entry to
from 0 (default) to 1. (ie 0=no scrolling 1 =scrolling)
Quote:
; Allow Mouse Scrolling in Windowed mode
MouseScrolling = 1

Hello All,
Like many I received a French Language Tech Tree Poster in my Civ4 box.
2k Was kind enough to post a .pdf of the poster in English. Kudos to them.
Problem is, the damned thing is so small when printed you can't read it.
So I, instead of working today, fired-up PhotoShop and made a new .pdf file which has the
different sections of the poster blown-up and on spearate pages.
Download it HERE:
http://ericcable.net/Civ4/Civ4.zip
I don't feel the thing viloates copyright in any way as I simply taking the .pdf that 2k is
distributing for free, and presenting it differently.
