Another extremely legally safe version of that just occurred to me -- those Maglite brand flashlights that are about five or six inches long. They have a hole at the base end if you want to attach a leather strap to it, but anyway, they're made out of good metal and are very tough. They're thin and easy to carry, but you could punch a hole in somebody's skull with one of those things.
