okay so is $250 for headphones the norm or is that really extravagent because I have absolutely no idea. Like if you had a college-age son and he announced he was spending this much of his own money would you freak?

Well, I'm that age and pay for everything myself but $250 is a bit extreme for the average consumer to spend on headphones. However, I'm happy with my headphones and get a lot of use out of them.
I agree with ThinMan and would look into something along the $50 - $150 range would probably be the most suitable. Right now the
Sennheiser 485D's go for $75 on Amazon.com.
Of course a headphone's sound quality is important but you may also consider other factors such as weight, comfort, design, portability, etc.
