For me, the ideal holdem game would contain a mix of player types. In a 10 handed game, I would like to see 7 or 8 players who play loose passive pre-flop and weak tight post-flop, and 1 or 2 absolutely clueless calling stations. This type of game is a lot lower variance than a game with everybody calling all the way to the river. The first type of player is pretty common. They see way too many flops, contributing dead money to the pot most of the time. They typically don't raise preflop without a big pocket pair AK, or maybe AQ, so you can get out of their way when they do raise. One or two post-flop calling stations will pay off your good hands. More than this will build big pots, but the frequent draw-outs really increase the variance.
