I think you should have bet the river. There are very few hands where I think he raises your river bet==>it is unlikely to cost you anymore than you were going to pay any way. Given his 3 bet on the flop, I don't think he has a hand that he is likely to fold on the river, so you will proboly get action. Also, if he is a thinking player, he may guess that you were on a diamond draw ==>making it less likely that he will bet the river if he has an 8, pocket pair, or even a Q.
That being said, I dont think the river C/C is far behind.
Question: why are you convinced that this was a steal attempt? I wouldn't have read it that way.
