Do you or any of your friends know any French? It would certainly be helpful. Montreal is an awesome place. I live in Seattle, so I've been to Canada many times -- and going to Montreal was the only time I truly felt like I was in a foreign country.
(You can get by without speaking French up there, but some of the restaurants we went to had French-only menus and the staff didn't even speak English.)
