Whatever he got, he deserved it. That rule is BS. I've never heard of such an obvious angle! Even if this rule saw some legitimate use in SOME situations (and I know of NONE), its potential for abuse (especially heads-up) would lead any reasonable person to strike it from their home game.
I honestly think that the host was just doing his best to take advantage of the n00b's lack of knowledge of the rules. He saw an opportunity to fleece a new player and took it. That's why I feel his black eye was well deserved.
