Octave is a freeware Matlab clone that I've heard good things about... I haven't actually used it myself, but now that I remember it exists I'll probably install it tonight when I get home.
If you PM me, I'll reply with a basic review once I get it up and running (this weekend-ish, maybe?). Conversely, if you use it feel free to let me know your impressions (especially if you are familiar with Matlab)
