The less confident you are in playing postflop, the more you should raise preflop.
I'm glad you lost this pot, it will go a long way towards teaching you the value of betting the flop with what is going to be the best hand a huge proportion of the time.
Occasionally you're going to get stuffed here, but that's why the game has such things as variance and required bankrolls and all that kind of stuff.
Make a nice bet on the flop and cut out all chances of him hitting a runner runner. You will also be amazed how often a hand like K7 decides to donate his chips to you.
