In hindsight it was probably bad because I increased the pot size like Sklansky says not to do to avoid a "shootout" in his loose games section in 7CS4AP but I doubt most players at 2/4 are counting odds and making borderline fold/call decisions on the math.

It often doesn't matter whether your opponents are thinking in terms of pot odds in making their decisions... Sklansky's point is that, with opponents who will call with some holdings whether the pot is big or small, you can inadvertently make their calls correct by increasing the pot size on 3rd. It would be better to keep the pot small (in situations like a semi-dead overpair in a multiway pot) so that, if your opponents do decide to chase, they are doing so incorrectly. This is true whether or not your opponents are sophisticated enough to think in terms of pot odds.
