You need to steal more often than in a ring game because you need to keep your stack from wasting away. There are also a lot of +EV plays in a ring game that you don't make in a tourney. Sklansky talks about going into check-call mode in a tourney in situations that, if it were a ring game, you'd bet and call a raise.

The key factor in a ring game is that you maximize your long-term EV. In a tourney, you must accumulate/conserve chips.
