I think he played it pretty well actually.
On the turn if he bets and is raised, he pretty much has to pay off as he will be pot commited. However, unless he's playing against maniacs, if he bets, no worse hands will call him, except a worse Ten. He checks behind on the turn to A) induce a bluff on the river and/or B) lose the minimum when he is behind.
