I think this "early elimination" argument is widely overestimated and, anyway, it only applies to rare events i.e. when the number of tourneys you can play is limited (such as a weekly tourney in your local cardroom). For bascically permanently available online tourneys it is completely meaningless. In fact, it's the other way around: If your aim is to optimize your houerly rate, then it's always an error to pass on an even slightly profitable situation early in the tourney as you haven't yet invested much time, provided you can enter a new tourney in case you drop out.
