Eric, your point about this being a rare situation and it not affecting overall ev much is well taken, but this is a high stakes forum, where people are trying to squeeze out extra value and already know the basics, and i often wonder, when i have quads, whether "letting them catch up" is passing up too much value.
Also, while the exact situation Tex describes is extremely rare, many of the thoughts are applicable to a broad range of hands where the question is "will calling or raising get me more action?"
