getting 3.5:1 against a player with a wide range of hands, I'd call and check the flop without even looking at my hand. After he bets, there are many flops that I would run a bluff on still without looking at my hand.
If the flop doesn't come down like I'd like it to, or if he calls my check-raise and turn bet, then it's time to look at my cards and figure out what to do, which means bet/call with a pair, or check/fold without one.
