Re: Sox sign Seanez

I wish I followed this stuff more closely so I could get excited on my own about it. However, I shall take your word that the Sox have made yet another solid deal.
woot.

for example:
04/05 stats
billy wagner
125.3 IP's 11HR 146K 31BB/HBP
signed a deal for 11m a year for 4 years
seanez
106.3IP 7HR 130K 43BB/HBP
signed a deal for 1.9m
now obviously, wagner is a better bet to perform at that level due to having a larger sample size and being younger. however the red sox get seanez at less than 1/5th (for 2005) the cost and no commitment (other than some cheap 06 option) beyond this year.
that should show pretty easily why the deal is very good. better than taking my word for it anyway

Let's emphasize this point even furthur.
Bob Howry, Todd Jones, and Braden Looper all got multi-year deals with an average salary of over $4M.
Hector Carrasco got two years and $6.1M.
Tim Worell got 2 years and $4M.
Roberto Hernandez got 1 year $2.75M
Jose Mesa got 1 year $2.5M
Bob Wickman got 1 year $5M
Tanyon Sturtze, with his 5.10 ERA over the last two seasons and only one sub 5.00 in the last four seasons, got 1 year $1.5M (HOLY [censored]!!!!)
I don't think there is one pitcher on this list who is a better bet for 2006 than Seanez, and most are clearly much worse.
