I think it was a combination of both. First off, our starters did not perform very well and did not last very long. That was definitely the case and when your bullpen is not very good overall, making them pitch a high volume of innings is obviously trouble. There is only so much pitching two people can do, its simple math that either the weak people will have to pitch (proctor) or the good people will be overstressed. And of course you're 100% right about only having 2 good pitchers to count on from the bullpen.

I don't think Wang will or should be moved to the pen. He is too good and too young for that.

As for Gordon's contract, the yankees would have had to overpay for too long to keep him. He's old.
