I like to have small stacks in front of me, so when I play $4/8, I usually have more red chips than most. (That would be true anyway, because I am an Undisputed Worldwide Poker Champ and I rule.)
However, you should never be having to make change. I like to have at least 50 $1 chips so that I always have the correct amount for bets. If you didn't have at least 30 or so at all times, then you're slowing down the game, and that's a bad thing.
As fas as I'm concerned, the dealer was just doing her job.
