Betting doesn't give a free card (less risk).
Out of position, betting ensures that the hand doesn't get to the river with only $15 in it (less risk).
Checking IMO was to induce a worst hand (mostly PP's) to bet again and then feel compelled to call my river bet since the pot will be bigger. Checking is more risky, and the more aggressive move IMO..
