why do i have to play push or fold preflop poker here? this isn't much of an explanation

Because:
1. You have 11 big blinds. Because
2. You lost more than half your stack finding out if you were beat
3. You're still not sure you were beat (AK, TT?) and you were getting 4-1.
4. You now have 5bb left, not a nice place to be.
5. You let the limper see a cheap flop those times you actually did have the best hand.
6. You're in a very awkward spot if an overcard falls. Is bet 8k, fold to a push your plan on most flops?
7. You may have lost a chance to pick up 9k preflop by pushing.

That said, maybe calling preflop is fine if you think his range is particularly tight, but I don't think you want to be folding post-flop. Frankly, I think your line sucks. You probably let him get away from worse hands, and occasionally get bluffed off of the best hand. Check, let him commit himself when he has a worse hand (and yourself when he has a better one...oh well), and push. Or just push preflop...
