Here is my question, though. Are these guys all together on a team? Or are the guys planning a team, and some random guy also in the game can just hook up with them? Like, is Leroy cruising around messing up the precisely laid plans of many different teams? Or is he just the joker on one specific team?

They are all on the same team. In most of these games there are "guilds" which are a group of players that work together to get through the content.
My buddy plays this game 40 hours a week or something. It seems to be slightly worse for you than crack, I couldn't get into it thankfuly.
