Where I play, this rule is applied in both situations. If you show one player your hand any other player can request to see it. If you show one card anyone can ask to see the other one.

Frankly I think it's a good rule. Sure sometimes the information you give with the one card shown is generous, as your case was. But sometimes it is simply taunting. What if the flop comes AKT, you bet the other guy folds and you show the 9. That's kinda classless and the show one show all rule prevents it. All the "I'll show you one" showboating crap is prevented.
