I disagree somewhat. I have a 21" monitor capable of 2048 x 1536, but at that resolution on a 21" the text is very hard to read. At work I am using a 17" monitor with a max Res of 1280 x 1024, that would be the highest Res I would consider usable for a 17" monitor. I couldnt imagine 1600 x 1200 on a 15" monitor. Of course your mileage may vary.
