If he is playing very tight preflop then he is probably playing at least decent as a shortstack. Also good shortstack players are not limping into the pot, except maybe on the button. They mostly raise or fold. This in itself however is not indicative of good shortstack play. But if he is playing tight and raising or folding, then he is probably the real deal.
