variance (per hand) and number of tables are completely independent of each other. 2 things will happen when you play more tables:
1. your winrate will almost certainly drop due to paying less attention to each table, and the lower the winrate, the bigger the downswings
2. you will experience more variance per time unit, but that doesn't matter. if there's a .5% chance you'll lose 300 BB (which would be your required bankroll if you wanted a .5% RoR), then it won't change (much) if you play more tables.

without knowing you, I'd say you should play more tables. I think anyone under the age of 25 should be able to 3-table low limits just fine. you can try 2 first, then 3. but you'll never make any money 1-tabling .5/1. your hourly, if you're good will be $2-3/hr. that's just tedium


think of it this way:

downswing = winrate + negative variance

the higher the winrate, the less bad your worst downswings will be. variance is typically stable and dependent upon the player pool. some players can have more variance but not much.

so there's a tradeoff. you can 1-table and have a smooth ride, or you can multi-table and have a bumpier ride but win more money per hour.
