It's a lot of reasons, but I think the youth factor is the biggest part of it. The young guys in the league in many ways have so much to learn about the game and have little that identifies them from one another. When the norm was staying 4 years at college and coming out early meant "future star", the guys coming into the league were not only more well-versed in parts of the game besides one on one play, they were already somewhat established to the fan base. Marketing them from that point was easy.
