Don't read too much into that. There are a lot more choices these days. If you take a look at the
WS ratings from '68-2000 (this is the first list I could find), you'll see that the ratings have steadily declined since the rise of cable in the 80's. Almost every year is a new low because there are more channels, video on demand, tivo, internet, etc to choose from.
Heck, the Red Sox series last year is lower rated than any series before 1998.

And it's fair IMO to point out that had the White Sox gotten a tenth the attention on ESPN of either the Yankees or the Red Sox, the ratings would almost certainly have been higher. And given their dominant regular season and exciting stretch finish against the Indians, it's hard to say they shouldn't have had more coverage. Anyone who doesn't think the ESPN hype machine can impact things like eventual WS ratings is kidding themselves.
