The gap concept applies to any hand where the is a raiser/limper in front of you...but that's not the issue per se.

the gap concept does apply in the first hand. the question is how big is the gap. it's big enough that you instantly fold A9, but definitely not fold AK. the question is where AQ falls, and it's mostly opinion/experience. most of us agree AQ is not a fold.
