Though you are not required to hand over an ID you are required to identify yourself and falsely identifying yourself would be a violation of law

100% false under New York law.

Not exactly. It is the crime of False Personation if "after being informed of the consequences of such act" you "knowingly misrepresent" your name, birthdate or address intending to prevent the cop "from ascertaining such information". Penal Law 190.23. In other words, if the cop tells you it's a crime to give a false name and you do, it's a B misdemeanor.

However, you do NOT have to identify yourself. And it is NOT a crime to refuse to identify yourself.

Practically speaking it's pretty simple. Provide your ID and you'll hopefully be on your way in a couple hours with no charges. Or refuse to identify yourself in which case while legal you'll probably be brought down to the precinct and fingerprinted to see if you have any warrants and to try to determine who you are. Then they'll either release you or decide to charge you with something.
