Try playing low limit heads up tables. The players are not skilled, but it is really good practice for 6 max. You really have to focus on your opponents betting patterns and this carried over to 6 max. It will also make you more comfortable if your regular game get 2 or 3 handed. You can play .01/.02 or .05/.10 so you don't have to worry about losing a lot of money.
I think HU play improves 6 max play in the same way 6 max play improves 10 handed play.
