Burdz - Given your description of Counterman, I think the way you played was fine. I'd go ahead and bet the river.
You run the risk of getting check-raised (and if so, I think you bite the bullet and call) - but by betting you may turn what otherwise would be a split pot into a scooper (if Counterman somehow folds a better hand, or a hand that would tie you for low, to your 4th round bet. That maybe seems a bit far fetched, but is not impossible). Or, if Counterman calls with a weaker hand, you collect one more big bet. At any rate, I think the risk is worth the potential gain.
