Now, you're just being results-oriented. There is no reason for me to think that my hand is not good on the river when I'm first to act.

No way do I check call the river, but 3 betting seems extreme. I think the chances he calls with a worse hand for the 3rd bet are lower than the chances he calls the one bet or costs you an additional bet and reraises the river with a better hand.
I would bet-call.
